UWE Polo is the best form of riding! We are a mixed club and welcome all abilities! Weekly training and competitions are held at Beaufort Polo Club!
Welcome to the UWE Polo page! The most fun and inclusive club UWE has to offer :)
UWE Polo is a mixed club, which takes advantage of the brilliant facilities at Beaufort Polo Club, situated on the outskirts of Bristol. It's a six-pitch training facility, with newly built outdoor & indoor arenas. For more photos, please see beaufortpoloclub.com.
Polo is an all-year-round sport, with weekly training throughout the winter & summer holidays. In the winter we play on a sand arena pitch, and in the summer we play on grass.
Our club is open to all abilities and we welcome both riders and non-riders - NO previous experience of riding a horse is necessary! We have many different levels of play (beginner, median & novice) so everyone is welcome in both lessons and competitions! We ordinarily offer 2 sessions a week, Wednesday & Saturday, however we have the flexibility to adapt this if that doesn't suit you! The lessons costs start at £50 (increasing with experience level) - this is a reduced student rate compared to regular polo lessons. We have members who train weekly, but also those who come when they have the time & when their student budget allows, so there is no pressure to train regularly! Lessons will be organised on our WhatsApp but bought on the SU website. Transport for lessons to and from Beaufort is also organised on our WhatsApp group chat, with many members sharing lifts and no one being left behind!
At Beaufort Polo Club we have the ability to share lessons and compete with other universities such as UOB, CARDIFF, EXETER and RAU. It is a great way to connect with other universities and students who all share a love for horses!
Every Wednesday is Varsity Sports Night and we also hold a range of regular socials, with the occasional fun theme! Socials vary so that there is something for everyone - we know not everyone always wants to drink or go out. At Beaufort, we have the ability to use the amazing clubhouse which overlooks the professional pitches and serving a range of food & drinks. This past year, we have hosted post-match roast dinners and drinks, Christmas dinner and prize givings!
We will also be hosting a 'Polo Rules Night' for those new to the sport!
Each year we take part in the SUPA National Championships. Winter Nationals are held over a weekend in February and are usually played in the indoor arenas at Onley Grounds in Rugby. We normally stay all together in a hotel or AirBnB with several other universities.
Summer Nationals are held over a weekend in June and are usually played outdoors at Offchurch Bury Polo Club, near Coventry, where we traditionally 'camp' (Polo style - think bell tents, sofas and paddling pools of gin!) for the weekend.
SUPA brings together over 80 universities and over the 4 days, there are around 200 chukkas (games) to watch. The games are played by a range of abilities, so there are plenty of opportunities to meet some great people from across the country!
Some of our best socials are the summer & winter Nationals. On the last night of nationals, there is a social night where 300+ players from universities all over the UK attend and everyone gets to dress up!
In addition to Nationals, there are plenty of opportunities to compete against other universities such as Varsity, so plenty of opportunity to practice playing competitively if you'd like to! Again, there is no obligation to play competitively, but we do try to cater for everybody by offering the opportunity to play as little or as much as you'd like.
