Who am I?
I am a believer. I believe in human potential and challenging the status quo. Like Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You must do the things you think you cannot do”, I am confident that as long as we keep trying, we can achieve anything, hence why in my life toolbox I have three instruments - the first one is – persistence.
I am a Y1 Sociology with Psychology student, who fights for equality and human rights daily and promotes a "no double standards" culture. To build a community where women can thrive personally, academically, and socially, I will use my second instrument – listening.
I am a mother. The University of Parents is one I won’t graduate from. Why? Because despite how many academic articles and books on parenting I’ve read, somehow my pre-teen keeps saying that I don’t know anything… However, despite the unpaid labour, I am determined to raise a kind human being using my third tool – adaptability.
What experiences make me the best candidate?
As a Student Representative, I think our voice is our tool to challenge and shape current and future practices and policies. In the past semester, I’ve raised inconsistencies and challenged discriminative approaches within the organisation. I’ve listened to students about their first experience in higher education, and what could be done better. I’ve learned to concise valuable information and report constructive feedback to our lecturers.
Serving the community is very important to me, especially since losing my parents to cancer, and I continuously seek volunteering opportunities. In the past 9 years, I’ve dedicated time to organisations and charities like Macmillan Cancer Support, The Royal British Legion, Age UK, and The Salvation Army. Last year, for my mum’s birthday, I happily cut and donated my very long hair to the Little Princess Trust, and I’ve committed to do so in the future. Knowing that my hair would make another girl happy, brings joy to my heart.
Women’s sexual and reproductive health is an important topic to me because where I come from these topics aren’t well taught to girls and I grew up not knowing much about myself. I learned a lot about my body around pregnancy, post-natal and late adolescence which shouldn’t have been the case. One of my life goals is to change this for girls. In the meantime, I’ve happily decided to help women by donating eggs to couples struggling to conceive naturally.
Currently, I volunteer as a Social Researcher at Healthwatch, supporting the NHS and Social Care Services by collecting and analysing data across different projects. I meet with a diverse range of people, including refugees and asylum seekers, I gather their feedback and produce research reports with an end goal to improve the health and social services in the UK.
What are my key priorities and targets if I'm successful in being elected?
- Supporting Welfare
- I am committed to ensuring women’s safety, wellbeing and progress. Supporting my peer’s health, happiness and fortunes will be my main duty, and I will work with the university and the union to help those in need. And if I don’t know something, I will learn it, search it or create it.
- Advocating for Safety & Equality
- Something that has always bothered me in the law is that pepper sprays are illegal in the UK, and I think it will be helpful if we learn ways to defend ourselves. Therefore, if elected, I will organise workshops/webinars on self-defence.
- One of the major takeaways from my last employment within the Finance industry is that money talks, alongside career progression guides, are needed more than ever. Therefore, if elected, I will seek to cooperate with the existing university services/specialists and pull external resources to educate financial and professional development.
- Community Engagement
- Community is the backbone of wellbeing. Social support and a sense of belonging have a positive impact on people and are the drive towards self-improvement and growth. Therefore, if elected, I will promote the existing societies, research the types of events/engagements women are interested in and increase educational and healthy activities.
- I will support initiatives, research and celebrate women’s achievements.
