Manifesto for Vice President Sports and Health

Introduction

As a passionate and dedicated student at UWE Bristol, I am running for the position of Vice President Sports and Health to make sports and well-being more accessible, inclusive, and engaging for every student. My experience as a PAL leader and student representative has equipped me with the leadership and advocacy skills needed to create meaningful change. I believe in the power of sports to build a stronger community, improve mental and physical health, and enhance the overall student experience.

My Vision: A Healthier and More Active UWE

If elected, I will focus on the following key areas:

Enhancing Sports Accessibility and Participation

  • Work towards lowering the cost of sports memberships and activities to ensure student affordability.
  • Increase participation in competitive and social sports by promoting inclusivity for students of all skill levels.
  • Expand recreational and non-traditional sports opportunities, including casual fitness groups and esports.

Mental Health & Well-being through Sports

  • Develop initiatives that use sports to combat stress, anxiety, and loneliness.
  • On campus, introduce more free fitness sessions, such as yoga, meditation, and stress-relief exercises.
  • Collaborate with mental health services to integrate well-being support with sports programs.

Better Facilities and Funding

  • Advocate for improvements to existing sports facilities and equipment.
  • Ensure equal funding for all sports teams and clubs, ensuring that smaller or newer clubs receive the required support.
  • Push for additional training spaces and availability for students engaging in various levels of sports.

Strengthening Student Voice in Sports

  • Host regular “GOATing” (Go Out And Talk) sessions to gather feedback and ideas directly from students.
  • Ensure that student concerns about sports, fitness, and health services are represented in key university meetings.
  • Encourage transparency in decision-making regarding sports funding and event organisation.

Creating a Stronger Sports Community

  • Organise more inter-faculty sports competitions to encourage friendly rivalry and engagement.
  • Launch UWE Sports Mentorship Programs, pairing experienced athletes with beginners to build confidence.
  • Develop more student-led sports events celebrating diversity, such as cultural sports tournaments.
