What experiences make me the best candidate?
Dear UWE Students,
My name is Lubna, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for re-election as Vice President Community and Welfare at The Students’ Union at UWE. It has been an incredible privilege to serve as your representative, and I have dedicated my time to ensuring that every student feels supported, heard, and valued. During my time in this role, I have worked tirelessly to enhance student well-being, improve campus life, and advocate for meaningful changes that positively impact our diverse student community. From expanding mental health resources to tackling financial hardship, from improving campus safety to celebrating student diversity, I have made it my mission to create a university experience where everyone can thrive. However, there is still much to be done. With your support, I want to continue the progress we have made, address ongoing challenges, and introduce new initiatives that will further strengthen our community. I am passionate about making a real difference, and I am eager to build upon our achievements to ensure every UWE student feels safe, supported, and empowered throughout their university journey.
What my key priorities and targets are if I'm were successful in being elected
My Vision for This Year
1. Expanding Mental Health & Well-being Support
- Enhance access to counseling services and external mental health organizations.
- Organize Mental Health and Well-being Festivals throughout the year with interactive workshops, de-stress activities, and mental health awareness campaigns.
- Advocate for additional funding to ensure mental health services are available when students need them the most.
2. Financial & Academic Support for Students
- Push for reasonable adjustments and deadline extensions for students facing emergencies, ensuring fair academic policies.
- Continue lobbying for better financial aid, hardship funds, and subsidized food options on campus, following models from other universities.
3. Enhancing Campus Safety & Student Welfare
- Strengthen collaboration with campus security and local authorities to improve student safety, especially for those commuting to Bower Ashton Campus.
- Address the concerns raised in the Bower Travel & Safety Survey, ensuring better transport links and safer walkways.
- Continue working on harm reduction initiatives related to drug and alcohol policies, ensuring student well-being remains a priority.
4. Celebrating Diversity & Student Achievements
- Expand Diversity Week to include more cultural showcases, food festivals, and inclusivity workshops.
- Support student-led initiatives, including the UWE Podcast, Fairtrade Fortnight, and Deaf Awareness Programs.
- Strengthen representation for disabled and neurodivergent students by enhancing support services and recognition of their contributions.
5. Empowering Student Voices & Engagement
- Improve communication between students and The Students’ Union by increasing student feedback mechanisms.
- Create more opportunities for students to engage in leadership, mentorship programs, and student-led campaigns.
Why Vote for Me?
During my time in this role, I have successfully implemented various projects, including the Mental Health and Well-being Festival, D-Stress Initiative, Disability History Month events, and the Fairtrade Fortnight Campaign. I have actively worked on student safety concerns at Bower Ashton Campus, advocated for reasonable adjustments in academic deadlines, and participated in national lobbying efforts. My work with external well-being services, the Student Well-being Champions program like ‘‘From Stress to Success: Well-Being at UWE and SU’’, and student advisory committees and more has strengthened support structures for students across all campuses. With your support, I want to continue this momentum, bringing more changes that truly benefit students. I believe in a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive student community, and I am dedicated to making that vision a reality.
