    WHAT IS HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY?

    Holocaust Memorial Day encourages remembrance in a world scarred by genocide. We promote and support Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

    27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

    HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. Together we bear witness for those who endured genocide and honour the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.

    What is happening in Bristol and locally to commemorate the day:

    • University of Bristol Jewish Society are holding an event  on 23.1.24

    The Chair of the Council, Councillor Sarah Moore will make an opening address. The event will include readings, music, and poems on this year’s theme – ‘Fragility of Freedom’ – Featuring guest speaker Yolanda Ropschitz-Bentham, a retired psychology teacher and editor of two published books about Ferramonti, the Italian internment camp where her father was imprisoned during the war.
