Check out how we celebrated Diversity Day this year!
The Diversity Day Campaign was initially kick started by Bethel, the 23/24 Students’ Union VP Societies and Communications. However, is it still really Diversity Day, or is it Diversity Week now? Our Presidents pushed positive development of the already amazing campaign, making sure that this year it covered the entire duration of a week, and spread across all the UWE campuses!
Here were the Presidents 4 main objectives for Diversity Day:
Promote cultural awareness and understanding among students.
Provide valuable workshops.
Engage students in interactive activities celebrating diverse student groups.
Foster a sense of unity and inclusivity within our diverse student body.
Here is what the Students’ Union at UWE ran for Diversity Day in 2025:
Diversity Day Workshops
Mothers for Mother Workshop
Sam Kolawole, the Students’ Union President, saw the need for a workshop targeting parents, which embodies a big proportion of the Glenside campus demographic. This is why we invited ‘Mothers for Mothers’ to Glenside, a charity who provide support to Mothers and Fathers through a helpline, antenatal support, home visits, peer support groups, counselling and group trips. University led campaigns can often feel ‘young person’ focused, however inviting Mothers for Mothers to run a stall at Glenside encouraged a different demographic and supported diverse students.
We received highly positive feedback from this session with students telling us that they had ‘great chats’ and would be interested in having ‘a drop in place’ where they get 1:1 advice specifically on parenting support.
Inclusive Makeup Workshop
Adelaide Miles-Nilsen, the Students’ Union LGBTQ+ officer, felt passionately about ‘an inclusive space where LGBTQ+ students could learn more about make up without fear of judgement.’ The Students’ Union at UWE reached out to Jax-Glam Makeup, a local makeup artist who focuses on creating a safe and inclusive environment for people to learn about makeup regardless of their gender identity.
The session was broken up into two parts:
An hour lesson where Jax applied make up to our VP Education Khadiza and explained how she applied it.
An hour interactive session where students could try out their own make up techniques and ask Jax for advice.
On Diversity Day
Taste of Culture Fair
We invited our societies to take part in our ‘Taste of Culture Fair’, where 8 societies, the LGBTQ+ Staff network and Global Team ran stalls expressing the beauty of their cultures and groups. The aim of the fair was for our students to showcase parts of their communities or cultures, and to allow other students to interact with them.
The stalls provided students with various insights into their communities, including showcasing cultural clothing, food, music and support networks. Students were also provided with a free meal after the fair from ‘Sri Licious’, serving authentic Sri Lankan dishes. We had over 80 students attend this event.
Thank you to all the societies that made our ‘Taste of Culture Fair’ burst with diversity!

No More Silence Magaziene Unveiling
The ‘No More Silence’ unveiling allowed 4 authors to give readings of their submissions to the magazine, which included powerful topics such as strength and ambition, experiencing microaggressions and prejudice, and inspiration.
Fashion Showcase
Our Presidents Team hosted the performance, and the Fashion Showcase at the end where they invited students to come up on stage to tell the audience about their culture and cultural clothing.
Thank you to everyone who made this Diversity Day one to remember, we cannot wait to celebrate with you again next year!
