I had the honour of speaking at the event organised by the team at ‘We the Curious’ alongside other key speakers, sharing my experiences and answering questions on how curiosity influences career choices.
Something I am very keen on as highlighted in my manifesto is to encourage students to get active as a way of dealing with stress and improving their mental wellbeing.
Row Britannia supports mental health, fitness and wellbeing of students and young people whilst raising money for student mental health charities. On the 24 February, we welcomed Phil Packer, the Ocean Row Boat and his assistance dog. We had the opportunity to demonstrate the efforts UWE Bristol have been making with Row Britannia and chatted to Phil about UWE Bristol, The Students' Union, mental health, as well as our involvement in the fundraising campaign.
For Feel Good February (FGF) I supported the Row Britannia event by facilitating promotion with The Students’ Union Marketing Team and by engaging with the activity by donating and rowing on the machine alongside Joshua Edje (VP Sports and Health). in the fundraising campaign. in the fundraising campaign. in the fundraising campaign.
I organised a ‘Know your Blood Type’ event on 20 February at Frenchay and Glenside Campus with the NHS, as part of the FGF programme. The event encouraged students to find out what their blood type is and register to be a blood donor.
As part of my commitment to improving satellite campus visibility, in February I worked from our satellite campuses Glenside, Bower and Arnolfini, as the Presidents had planning away day at Arnolfini. I also engaged with students on several occasions including the Big MOVE at Bower, half-price food day at Glenside and Sustainability Market at Frenchay.
Following the sustainability board meeting, I am happy to share that the ethical investment policy was reviewed and the sustainability policy was signed by myself, the Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors. UWE Bristol also recognises the climate and ecological emergency.
Due to reports of xenophobia from students, as a Presidents Team, we decided to make a video in collaboration with the University Communications Team. This showed solidarity and reminded students that UWE Bristol operates using a zero-tolerance approach to hate incidents, discrimination and hate crimes and advised the use of the Report and Support tool when needed.
The strategy 2030 was officially launched in February and as The Students’ Union President, I am ready to continue to join forces with the university to work on achieving this goal. Prior to this launch, I supported the 2030 strategy students consultation sessions held cross-campus, ensuring that students’ voice is heard during this crucial process. Check it out here.
On the 12 February, I had the honour of speaking at the ACE decolonizing the curriculum conference held at the Exhibition and Conference Centre on Frenchay campus. The conference focused on areas such as reading lists and resources, the modular v holistic approach, finding solutions to perceived challenges to decolonisation, student recruitment and Outreach, inclusivity in staff, marketing and promotional materials and assessment and examinations.
It was a pleasure to attend the Chinese New Year celebration in Bristol earlier in February, representing UWE Bristol's diverse student body alongside the Lord Mayor and other UWE Bristol staff.
I also had the pleasure of celebrating the Lunar New Year with the UWE Vietnamese Society.
The Committee of University Chairs Higher Education Code of Governance means that the Board of Governors is required to conduct a full and robust review of the effectiveness and of their committees at least every four years. Therefore in February, I had an interview with a representative from GGI to ensure that good governance is practised within the university.
