We are coming towards the end of term one which means it’s almost Christmas, can you believe it?
The University had about 12 ceremonies in November, celebrating some of our students and marking the end of their course. I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate everyone who recently graduated and to everyone yet to graduate, always remember; “There is light at the end of the tunnel, but the way out is through” – David Allen.
Did you know that an average of 16 men take their own lives, every day in the UK? Men are largely expected to show no weakness and ManUp. According to Movember, 3 out 4 suicides are male. The Students’ Union, raised over £4000 in support of Movember and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff members, societies and clubs who worked hard towards raising these funds.
The RAG team organised ‘Sports Does Strictly’, which involved members from a range of sports club teaming up with either a member Culture Fusion Dance Society or UWE Dance. This encouraged collaboration between various teams and I am happy to have been involved. The event raised about £1500, and all proceeds went towards the charity ‘United Through Sports’.
On behalf of the Presidents, I would like to send special thanks to Jane Harrington (Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost) for being such a great support system. Thank you for all the work you have done at UWE Bristol. You have left a remarkably positive impact on many and I wish you all the very best in your new role.
DVC recruitment
As a voice for approximately 30,000 students, I have been involved in the recruitment process of the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), sitting on the case study discussion and the final interview panel making sure that the student voice has a say in the DVC that is appointed.
Inter-faith week
As part of inter-faith week, which happened earlier in November, we invited a member of the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) who delivered a workshop on “Why Jews speak Hebrew” this was a really useful learning opportunity for myself and other attendees.
Exec meeting
In November, an initial executive meeting was had, involving The Students’ Union Presidents and the Part-time Officers discussing ways in which we can better support and represent our students.
Remember, I am here to represent the UWE Bristol student community. Please feel free to pop into The Students' Union on Frenchay Campus to see me, or catch me at our satellite campuses during one of my pop-ups.
