At The Students’ Union at UWE, we are deeply concerned about the reports of violence and the loss of life resulting from the protests currently taking place in Bangladesh, where students are holding rallies against quotas in government jobs, which students argue is a discriminatory system.
The right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights, and we urge all parties to respect these principles. The students' demand for a merit-based system, promoting fairness and equality in opportunities.
Our thoughts are with students and staff who may be affected by the ongoing protests, especially any UWE students and their friends and family in attendance of the protests.
We are working with the Bangladesh Society, Global Student Support team, Wellbeing Team and Pastoral Care team to organise an informal meet up and support session next week.
Date: Thursday 25 July 2024
Time: 11:00 – 13:00
Location: Upper Engagement Space, The Students’ Union at Frenchay
UWE has a package of different assessment support processes available for students affected by personal circumstances which may impact on your studies, including the 48 hour (effective from 1 September 2023) late window. If you miss assessments that result in failing components, you will automatically be entitled to a re-sit without any academic penalty.
If you are having difficulty with your studies, it is we recommend either reaching out to your programme leader for any further academic support that may be available, or our Advice Centre (details below). You can also contact a Student Advisor who can go through options available to you (please contact your nearest InfoPoint to arrange this).
You can also reach out to our Bangladesh Society for community support from fellow Bangladeshi UWE students.
We wanted to remind students that advice and wellbeing support is available through our Advice Centre team, who are on hand to support you during this difficult time. They can provide you with friendly, non-judgemental and confidential support. You can find their contact details here.
