Check out what our Presidents team has been up to so far this year, including exciting events, impactful wins in advocacy, and campus initiatives.

President - Kolawole Samuel Olure

• At the beginning of term, the President organised a successful online Meet and Greet session for new students on Instagram Live, providing an opportunity to introduce them to the offerings and activities at The Students’ Union, and give them information about starting at UWE. During the session, special guests, Mr. Jimi Ogunnusi CMgr FMCI, and City Campus Officer Aengus Miralto-Desmond, shared valuable insights and experiences about university life. The session proved to be interactive, allowing new students to pose various questions about the university and receive firsthand information from knowledgeable guests. It became a great opportunity for everyone to connect, learn, and engage in a supportive and informative environment.

• Samuel has also actively urged the university to reevaluate the current student payment plan, which requires two payments of 25% in December and February. This structure has proven overwhelming for some students, causing financial struggles. He has advocating for a more flexible and balanced approach to alleviate the burden and support students facing challenges with the existing payment schedule.

Vp Community and Welfare - Fayaz Kareem

• Fayaz has successfully recruited 14 students for the Student Wellbeing Champion Committee. This dynamic group will play a vital role in promoting and enhancing student wellbeing within our community. He is looking forward to their valuable contributions in creating a supportive and positive campus environment.
• He has successfully recorded several insightful UWE Buzz podcasts featuring distinguished guests. The first episode features a conversation with Vice Chancellor Steve West, where they discussed various topics. In the second episode, he had the pleasure of speaking with Louise Goux-Wirth, exploring her expertise and perspectives of mental health issues across the Black Community. There are more episodes to be shared soon, you can find them all on our YouTube channel.

Sabiha Khan – VP Education

• Sabiha attended a Higher Education Summit, where she had the chance to meet sabbatical officers and staff from various student unions and universities across the UK. The experience proved to be valuable as it offered an opportunity to exchange ideas and perspectives on student life and education. Engaging with diverse representatives during the summit broadened their understanding of the higher education landscape and inspired collaborative initiatives.

• Sabiha has also been very enthusiastic to record a Reel about Diwali sharing the Hindu festival and showing us the how people India celebrate the festival of lights. In the video, she also shared more sustainable ways that people can celebrate the holiday.  

Krishna Singh: VP Sports and Health

• Krishna had the privilege of participating in the Sports Conference, where he had the opportunity to meet members of a variety of societies in person and discuss further actions that they could take in order to improve the sports activities at The Students’ Union. Every member was able to share their ideas and form a discussion to provide some sort of feedback of how to overcome the current challenges that the sports societies are facing.
• Krishna also supported the Sports and Colours Event during Black History Month. By contributing to this event, he aimed to recognise the significant impact of black individuals in sports, both historically and in the present day. It was a great opportunity to meet many students and play different sports, such as football, basketball, etc.

Bethel Ekaette – Vp Societies and Communication

• Bethel launched a captivating first episode of the Societies Unveiled Podcast featuring the dynamic members of the Bollywood Dance Society, which you can listen to on Spotify and RSS. The society shares their passion for dance and their rhythmical Bollywood songs. It was a great achievement for him and for the Bollywood Dance Society.
• He led the Black History Month celebrations with a variety of events and the introduction of the 2023 Celebrating Culture Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame honoured individuals from UWE staff and students whose impact extends beyond boundaries. It was a lovely month with many activities and engagement with students.

• He shared that TEDxUWE license has been approved, and he is very excited to prepare for the upcoming event, which will take place in 2024.
