Find out about The Students' Union update on travel and safety for students and staff at Bower Ashton Campus.
As The Students’ Union at UWE’s Vice-President for Community and Welfare and City Campus Officer, we believe that all students deserve safe, reliable, efficient transport options, plus the feeling of safety when commuting to and from Bower Ashton Campus.
We have received a large volume of feedback from students and staff at Bower over feeling unsafe leaving campus via walking and cycling routes, especially heading into the winter months. We understand this is compounded by the lack of a direct bus to campus. We are working in partnership with many UWE services and stakeholders to better map all concerns so we can re-engage First Bus, the Local Council and the Directorate at UWE Bristol to seek change.

What has The Student’s Union previously done on the issue of the bus service to Bower?
When the 71 bus service did not come back post COVID, we ran a survey for students to understand their needs and actively campaigned to the return of this service.
We knew that the bus route is needed for many reasons:
We called on First Bus to bring back this essential element to student life at UWE Bristol.
Your Students’ Union President met with First Bus Chief Executive on numerous occasions with Professor Steve West, the Vice Chancellor of UWE Bristol. First Bus will bring back the bus service, if UWE pays the £300,000- £500,000 bill. UWE Bristol and First Bus has not been able to move past this stalemate.
We have directed students to complain directly to First Bus through https://www.firstbus.co.uk/help-support/complaints-feedback/customer-complaints-charter so the level of complaints can be addressed and understood.
