UWE Bristol has been ranked as a ‘first class’ university and 11th of all UK universities for its environmental and ethical performance, according to the 2023/24 People & Planet University League.
UWE Bristol ranked 11th in UK for first class environmental and ethical performance
The league is the only comprehensive and independent annual league table of environmental and ethical performance of 151 UK universities.
The first-class rating is awarded to the top 29 performing universities, which saw us rise from 22nd place last year to 11th in the latest league table.
Published annually in the Guardian, the aim of the rankings is to provide independently verified information in a transparent and accountable way in the public domain, with a view to pushing universities to do more to address climate and ecological crises. The league is a powerful tool in furthering the work of what is the largest student network in the UK, campaigning for social and environmental justice.
This year, the league assessed 151 UK institutions on 13 categories, including carbon management and reduction, student and staff engagement, sustainable food, workers’ rights, ethical investment, education for sustainability, and ethical careers. UWE Bristol made progress in many categories, scoring between 95-100 % in Auditing & Environmental Managing System; Education; Engagement; and Sustainability Staff.
Our improved rating reflects the hard work and leadership of many staff members from across the University and The Students' Union. Paul Roberts Head of Environment and Sustainability said: 'Great work, UWE and SU - alongside our recent EAUC Green Gown award for Sustainability Institution of the Year, I hope this recognition by People & Planet will inspire us all to go further faster in embedding climate action and sustainability into our teaching, research, civic engagement and operations.”
