We run a weekly £5 entry tournament every Wednesday from 18:00 at 5X107, where you can meet like-minded people, improve your poker skills, and have fun!
Those who purchase memberships collect points throughout the year. The position that you finish in a tournament determines how many points you get. Points are used to determine the size of your bonus stack (and prizes) for the end-of-term final game, exclusive to Poker Society members. The end-of-term final game has a much larger cash pot that is built up from pots throughout the year. During weekly games, re-buys (Maximum 2) are available until the first break at £5. Each week, there will be a cash prize to the final players (pots and winners will vary depending on the number of players).
We welcome players of all abilities. We always welcome new players, especially those new to the game, as we provide teaching if desired. We organise tournaments on a weekly basis and run a league table throughout the term based on weekly results. All games are played in a fun and friendly atmosphere, encompassing all players equally.
Poker is a skill-based card game where your goal is to either have the best hand or bluff your way to victory by making your opponents fold. In our society, we play Texas Hold'em, a popular variation of poker. Here’s a simplified guide to how it works:
1. Starting the Round: Each player is dealt two private cards that only they can see. The round starts with two mandatory bets called the small blind and the big blind, placed by the two players to the left of the dealer. These create the initial pot to play for.
2. Betting Rounds: Players take turns deciding to either:
3. The Flop: After the first round of betting, three community cards are dealt face up in the center of the table. These cards are shared by all players, and you can use them with your 2 cards to form the best five-card hand.
4. The Turn: Following another round of betting, a fourth community card (called "the turn") is dealt. Players can now form a combination of their cards and the four community cards.
5. The River: A fifth and final community card, called "the river," is dealt. At this stage, you have access to all five community cards, and your hand must be made from any combination of your cards and the community cards.
6. Showdown: After the final betting round, players reveal their hands. The player with the best combination of five cards wins the pot. If all but one player folds before this point, the remaining player wins the pot without needing to show their hand.
Remember: You do not have to show your cards unless you’re the winner. However, it's good etiquette to reveal your hand if other players have paid to see it.
