Who are we? We are a society that teaches and promotes the Afro-Brazilian martial art called Capoeria.
The teachers come from the groups Tunan Capoeira and Nucleo de Capoeragem. More information will be available soon.
Our mission is to provide a friendly environment where you can be challenged in a safe environment to grow not only in physical capabilities but also mental, emotional and spiritual resilience. Brief History: What is capoeira? Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that has been developed by the slaves that have been taken from West-Africa. The martial art is deliberately made to look like a dance, as any from of martial training was not allowed for the slaves. This brought them to implement musical instruments and songs to decieve the colonisers into believing that it was a traditional dance.
Typically, if you see capoeira, the people are stood in a circle called 'roda', around two players. Making up part of the circle is those who play the instruments, that area of the circle is called 'bateria' and a sparring round between two players is called a 'jogo'. These are the primary elements of capoeira. The bateria is made up of three main instuments called berimbau, pandeiro and atabaque.
Today, capoeria is practiced internationally and the only martial art recgnised by UNESCO as having Cultural Heritage status.
Why practice capoeira? Capoeira is a martial art that moves the entire body and makes you strong and agile. But in contrast to other martial arts, capoeira also teaches musicality in the form of songs and the instruments played during a roda. You will also learn a considerable amount of portuguese from singing and speaking to other capoeristas. Capoeira in this sense is very unique for teaching you a wider range of skills than other martial arts which makes it stand out from the rest.
There is also a wide community that is ready to welcome you once you start your journey! Capoeira being practiced internationally means that anywhere you go, you can easily find partners to train with. This also includes travelling to different capoeira events where you will meet other people who also share the same passion for this art.
Where and When? More information will be available soon on classes. We will also regularly update our Instagram page! Message us there if you are interested!!
