Extra Information:

Now more than ever, the university must show its commitment to protecting the safety of its students and staff. With a screening program using pooled samples, it's possible to identify COVID cases early and have them isolate before they even have symptoms, thus preventing further spread of the virus. We have seen the University of Bristol go under lockdown (https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmetro.co.uk%2F2020%2F10%2F09%2Fbristol-university-in-lockdown-with-300-isolating-in-halls-after-40-test-positive-13396921%2F&data=02%7C01%7Csuideas%40uwe.ac.uk%7C6f7ff6127b1c42aef75a08d86c54a007%7C07ef1208413c4b5e9cdd64ef305754f0%7C0%7C0%7C637378458006566744&sdata=XZ%2Bv%2Fmz%2FkMDVH%2BXSKHudb5efcfyt84UxZah%2BbZwkJJU%3D&reserved=0) after recording 40 cases of Coronavirus. Not a single student or member of staff would want us to follow suit.

Though cases are currently more concentrated in the North, we must not be complicit. The University has been very active in the national response to the pandemic, hosting the Nightingale Hospital Bristol and now a community testing centre. It is equally important that UWE thinks about the state of epidemic among its student body and workforce and goes above and beyond fulfilling legal requirements (for a COVID Secure campus) to keep it under control.
